Wont start in Park?

Hey everyone,

I'm new here. Just has a question for you guys. My g/f's car is a 01 sunfire. She told me that a couple times today, the only way she could get the car to start is put it in neutral. She said it wont even attempt to crank when its in park. Is there some kind of switch or relay that i need to change. Sometimes it starts in park and sometimes it wont even attempt.

Another possibility--- I have a '97 sunfire, and realized that the little button on the underside of the shifter that you need to press sometimes gets flipped upwards somewhat-- allowing you to either not turn the car off or not start at all (nothing happens-- no click, no sound, just silence except for anything like chimes or stereo going). Check to make sure its in proper position next time it does this.
