Would a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am be a good first car for me?

I found a good deal on one (High miles, but mostly highway, mechanic owned, very clean.), but before I jump on it, I want to know if I'm going to end up paying its price in maintenance and repairs a year from now. More importantly, is it safe?
