automatic?? everyone says that manual transmission acelerate quicker than a typical stock automatic transmission, but also mention the term "faster" as if a random manual car happens to just have a higher top speed than any automatic. is this true?

In theroy a manual trans has less "Slippage" through the gears, an auto has a torque converter which has a amount of "slip" built in
both all things being equal should have a simmilar top speed in top gear on the trans depending on the ratio of the rearend and other factors like driver skill will enter into it also..
I have seen and owned both types and had "fast" cars with both types it all boils down to the driver and set up...

The main reason people think a Manual is faster, if because with a standard tranny, you can control the RPM's at which the car is being shifted. With an auto, its controled for you. So for the MOST part yes the standard will accelerate faster, but top end will remain the same.
