Security light never went away. Replaced the BCM because the diagnostic came back with an internal error. Still have the original. When I installed the replacement the car started with the mechanical keys given so the bypass in theory should work. It wasn't until after getting it programmed that the same problem continued. I have tried two different relearn procedures that were recommended and they have yet to work. Any advice on a proper relearn procedure for my car?Exactly what did trouble starting mean?
Did you have a security light on?
Why did you replace the BCM rather than replacing the ignition switch and lock?
Do you still have the original BCM?
The BCM was not programmed for my car from Rock Auto and it presented multiple errors. Once programmed to my vin all the errors cleared except for VATS. When the dealer paperwork said internal problem i went with a replacement hoping that was the issue. I had attempted the resistor method prior to ordering the replacement and had no luck so to me going with the replacement was the next logical choice. Went through the whole process again after the switch and no luck. Tried two different relearn methods and still no luck. Any advice? If it started after the BCM was replaced with the keys you had why did you program?
I know what P1629 says but in solutions for it where did you see replace the BCM, I find nothing that says replace it.
Hello, I just came across your column while searching about the passlock issue, and seen your last update and seen that you haven’t had issue for a few days now. But since that was back in 2014 I am just curious if your wiring and grounding out the Switch if it worked and never gave you anymore issues. Because my car is having issues several times a day now and it’s getting very annoying. I already had a switch for my remote start but accidentally pulled it off couple years ago and now that my ignition switch was recently replaced I am having issues several times a day instead of every now and then.Ok, I have another update with the Theft Sys saga on my '96 Grand Am. After installing the switch, it seemed to work out but then .... yes, the Theft Sys light started flashing, the switch didn't help no matter the position.
I happened to be talking to a tow truck driver, the subject came up and he's had a similar issue. He said he just grounded out the security module.
So I pulled the wires from the switch, tied them back together and reconnected them to one side of the switch, then wired the other side to ground. Now, when the switch is open, the theft system circuit is closed as is normal. If there is a problem, flip the switch and the theft system circuit is grounded out.
I have been driving it now for a few days and have not been able to make the car stall out with the theft system since.
Ah, sweet success!
