...tranny/tires question? I have a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am that is need of new tires and rims. Since I know nothing about cars, I need to know what size tires I would need to buy. I don't know if this will help or not but it is the recaro edition. I think it's 205x65x15 but am not sure. I do know they are 15's.

Also I need to replace the transmission. It is a 305 motor. I was told there are 2 different types of transmissions (automatic) that it could be. I need to know which one so I can buy one lol. I know you can tell which type when you pull the original but is there any way to tell before pulling it? All help would be great and if you need more information just let me know. thank you!
p.s. my car is sitting about an hour away at my dad's house. I cannot just walk out and check things. I have no other vehicle.
p.p.s. my transmission is OUT. I cannot take it to a car place because it is sitting out in the sticks and the nearest one is about 30-45 miles away. My car will not go past 30 m.p.h.

look on side of tire for size also...tirerack.com or discount tire.com...and on the tranny...go to tranny guy,,,come back in a week and pay 1300 and drive away,,,no problem

I would get the tire shop to replace the tires with the correct ones, need to see the car. The tire placard may even be incorrect if non standard wheels have been fitted given the age of the car.

Whilst up on the hoist at the tire shop get the fitter to grab the details off the trans for you. You could even just drop into a workshop they will help.

Cheers

Tires sound right for that car a 205/65/15 as for trannys is it a 3 speed or dose it have overdrive in it the way to tell is to look at the shifter if 3 or 4 foreward gears on the selector if it is a 3 speed it probally is a TH-350 or a 200R4 if it is a 4 speed then it is a 700R4 usually in old V-8 cars it was the TH-350 or the 700R4 If the tranny is out of the car then look at the bell housing from behind the transmission if it has 2 metal tabs sticking out on each side (ears) then it is a TH-350

As far as the tranny goes,a 350 turbo hydromatic,or the 400 turbo hydromatic, the tires,as long as they're 15" s then go with what it has on it,ask your dad to go and look at the side wall of the tire, the tranny,go to the junk jard and you can pick one up for $80 to $120.T/A is a GM product so the 350TH or the 400 TH will fit, even out of any V-8 GM vehical, cadallac, impala and so on,a 305 is the same bolt pattern is a 350,267,400 anything chevy.

The tires should be either marked on the sidewalls or you should be able to find information on the tire plackard in the door Jamb on the drivers side ..
they should be 215-60R 15 for most Trans ams that year but you should be able to check with any tire store for a recomendation
The transmission would be a TH-700R4 the TH-200 was not used in the 84 model in most cases , unless you have an early production model the easiest way to tell would be to check if it is an overdrive or not the 700s are the overdrive trans the 200 is a three speed Non overdrive
The TH-400 and TH-350 were not put in any 3rd generation 82-92 cars..
Also they do not have any mount for the torque arm and wont work in any 82-92 without an adaptor kit ..
