Hi i urgently need your help. on my 1965 catalina i want to pull the thru axles to replace the wheel bolts.
should be a gm 8.2 "axle. heart bolt has to get out first. Unfortunately, the locking pin broke off and was stuck in it. With a lot of patience I finally got him out.
Now my question! I only know that with the C-clips, is that also the case with this axis? because I can neither get the heart bolt out nor move the axle.
heart bolt should come out after removing the screw. But does not want to destroy the differential basket.
Then push the thru axle in and release the clip, that's how I know it. Do you have tipps for me?

You should be able to knock out the pin with a punch, unless a piece of the bolt broke inside the pin , and the pin spun... then you are in trouble ...had to cutting torch a C clip one out when that happened to me once...carrier was trashed and unusable after that...

You look like you have bolt in axles, not c clip so just bolt the drum on backwards with the lug nuts ( just a couple of threads) and use the drum as a slide hammer to pull the axles out.

Ok
then I'll try if I can bring out the thru axles.
without clip ....
but the heart bolt should go out after removing the safety screw, right?
or does it only go out when I have stub axles out?
or do you have to twist it?
all very strange

Yes, the safety bolt should let the heart bolt
slide out easy if all of it is out and a piece isnt stuck in there...

You may have to take out the carrier and take it to have someone cut it out the pin with a plasma, a piece of the bolt may be stuck in there and wedging the pin preventing the pin from coming out.

If you take out the carrier, make sure you keep track of what side the shims came out from ( left and right) and the bearing races also.

If all you are trying to do is replace the wheel studs, why did you even open up the rear other than to install fresh fluid?

I guess he thought it was a C clip axle setup, Mel, now he found a bigger problem....carrier will have come out if the crosspin is stuck in there. Easy fix with nowdays tools, much harder in the old days. My crosspin spun and what was left of the broken retaining bolt wedged in the carrier back in the 90's, was a nice 7.5 Monza posi unit from the factory with rare 3:43 gears , had to cut it up to get it out.

After that , I went to a minispool in a open carrier, never had trouble again...

So yesterday I only had 10 minutes ... but I already had a thru axle out .... was very easy. with the drum as a slide hammer.
now only the heart bolt should be out. it should be able to be pushed and turned a long time ago. neither is the case.
So it turns but only when I turn the thru axle. but it should also turn by hand! however, when i turn the thru axle i notice the bolt has air.
still have to find out where it is hanging.
because the locking screw is completely out

Easier to take the gear carrier out ( 4 bolts ) and put in a vice, or hydraulic press, or plasma it on a work bench to get it out. Just keep track of what side the shims and bearing races come out on, so to put back in.

OK
yes it would be better! with the press i don't know either ... not that the basket breaks.
the 4 screws how much torque do they get again?
shims again the right amount on the right side then the setting is right again !?
but why is he so stuck? can someone tell me
come in?

Put back the shims and races right back on the same sides they come off on ( tape or wire them to keep track on what side) yes the alignment will be correct.

60 FT Lbs torque on the 4 bolts.

As for your cross pin, try taping it out first on a bench vice, then easy on the press, then cut it out as a last resort.....

The open diff carriers are stronger than the posi carriers...
