Verifying engine

I found a 67 firebird convervtible I am interested in. The owner is calling it a numbers matching. I have no reason to doubt him, but... is there anyway to verify that the 400 engine he has is the original 400 and not just A 400? Thanks Oly

Read this article in particular the location of the engine code and VIN stamp on the passenger side of the block, front of engine. The VIN should match the title or registration. The engine code should match for a 67 400, either automatic or manual and which 400, there was more than one.

The problem with verifing a pre 1968 Pontiac engine block is they did not start stamping the partial VIN number on the engine blocks until very late in the 1967 model year. So if the cars VIN says it is a V8 car, the 2 digit engine code matches one installed in that model (including manual or automatic transmission) and the block and head date codes are a few days to weeks before the cars assembly date, there is no way to prove without a doubt that the engine is or is not original to that car.
Of course you could get lucky and it could be a late production 67 with the partial VIN stamped on the block.

Dont forget the engine code needs to be verified

Actually anything older than 67 also can not be verified, sorry for any confusion

So just to be clear, if it has the partial vin, it should be the last 4? Same as on the vin?
