Blower motor issue?

My air just stopped working (and the heat), when I turn the fan speed dial nothing happens, the fan does not turn on in any position. When I turn it on to any position I do hear a noise, kind of like a hiss sound, is the best I can describe it, like the compressor is attempting to kick on and the engine starts getting louder, and when I turn it off the noise goes away and the engine gets quieter again, but at no point does the fan turn on. I have attempted to change the settings, tried using heat, put it on recirculate back to fresh air, thrned the AC on and off, changed the vent selector dial, but nothing happens. A few times, which might be a fluke, the fan kicked on again for a few seconds when I set it for high heat, but would turn off again in 5-10 seconds, but it wont even do that now.

Prior to it failing completely the fan would intermittently go out but only for a second or two at a time, and once it failed completely but started working again about an hour later, but now it is completely stopped.

Also, when the fan runs it is LOUD, as in sometimes I turn it off for a second just to verify that it’s not the engine. Seriously, when my air is on the car sounds like a Harley.

I don’t know if it is relevent but the cabin air filters were recently changed and the old ones were HORRIBLE, I’ve never seen filters that bad, they were completely cakes in dirt and even had leaves in them. I don’t think they were changed since the car was new 18 years ago. Could debris have gotten in to the fan?

Am I correct in assuming that the fan has burned out? Is there any chance it could be the resistor or the switch?

It could be other issues but combined with it being noisy and the filter lack of maintenance, probably the motor. You can test the connector at the motor for power at the various fan speeds. If you have power you know it's the motor.

What other issues could it possibly be?

FYI, it came on again, it stopped again briefly but I did my playing with the controls thing again and it came back on when I switched back to fresh air, but again, that could be a coincidence. After it came back on I was able to switch to recirculate and back again with no issues.

I should also note that while it is still very loud, it doesn’t seem to be QUITE as loud since I had the power steering pump replaced, and the noise is really only noticeable from outside the car unless I have my windows down. It makes me think the compressor had an issue, but it does it when set to heat as well as far as I can tell, and that doesn’t explain the blower motor stopping.

Also of note, if the blower motor is stopped, but I have the switch set to any speed and it is on fresh air air will come through the vents if I am at speed, in fact, if I have the air on the air will be cold, but obviously it is not the fan, just air pressure from outside.

I’ve been swamped all week and have not had the chance, also my multimeter seems to have walked away. I will but I’m just trying to get an idea of all my possibilities in the meantime. Beyond the motor, switch, and resistor though what else could it be?

There light be a high speed blower relay listed in owners manual.
