yes..its made to compete with the toyota mr2 of those years...

No it was not made to compete with the MR2.
The Fiero came out first. (Fiero came out in August 1983, MR2 came out March of 1984)
It was originally designed to be a sporty economy car. Then in 1985 with the introduction of the V-6 they leaned towards making it a sports car. By 1988 they had refined it so it was more of a sports car but the bean counters killed the program. It was intended to compete with the RX-7 Both in consumer and IMSA racing. The Fiero and RX-7 are the same wheel base and weight.

The MR2 is a smaller and lighter vehicle. The ONLY reason magazines compared the two of them is because of the mid-engine design.

compared to 1960's classic "sports cars"

I have owned classic "sports cars" such as an Austin Healy 100-4 and belonged to the 4-cyllinder club. If your definition of a sports cars is one that handles well, seats 2 passengers, and is fun to drive then your question is answered. I think my Fiero is ten times the car my Healy was, in power, comfort, quality, workmanship and fun. It doesn't corner as well, but overall it is a better quality car.
