Do you have to put premium unleaded fuel in a 1998-2002 pontiac firebird?

I don't really want to buy the expensive gas so could I put the regular unleaded fuel instead?

which engine is in the car? a V6 no, a V8 yes

I didn't think premium was recommended for either...?

In a previous post Jose mentioned a V8 and again mentioned a year range which leads me to believe he is shopping for a car and doesnt have one yet. Typically the answer is inside the fuel door assuming the decal/paint hasnt worn off. That generation had an LT1 V8 and premium was the recommended fuel. You can check at this website www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

Pretty much anything these days will run on 87 Octane fuel ..
you may notice a little better performance with Premium fuel but it is NOT required as the computer will compensate for detonation and poor fuel quality..

The Firebird/TA dropped the LT1 for 97 in favor of the LS1.
