Im new to the forums so i thought i would post a hello. now that's out of the way i will get down to buisness, i have a 79 ta ws6 and it has a low gear ratio axle, i do a lot of highway driving and its brutal on the engine and drivetrain, i dont know much about gear ratios, the question is what would be a good ratio for high speed driving? i have looked but i just dont understand the numbers, can anyone help me out? thanks.

If ya can find some, get some airplane gears and put in it, they have no top end

not sure, top speed is about 85. the axle makes a whining noise at anything above 30 mph. most times i start in 2nd and go straight to 4th, i will look to see if there is a tag on the axle but i wouldnt know what the numbers mean.

you check it by jacking the rear of the car and placing it on stands. Place the car in neutral with parking brake off. Place a paint or chaulk mark on the drive shaft and mark a rear tire also. Assuming you have a positraction rear both wheels should turn together. Turn the rear wheel one complete revolution and count how many times the axle shaft turns. If the axle turns 3 1/2 turns you have something like a 3.55 rear ratio if it turns over 4 times you have something like a 4.11 rear ratio. You should also check the fluid level in the rear while your at it.
