So what was wrong with it my car seems to be doing te same

there is a switch on the shifter down in the console. sometimes the wire wire comes lose from the switch...

The fuse

See if the brake light work if not the fuse is bad. If the fuse is bad the car will not shift.

The BTSI is defective( brake trans shift interlock). On most of GM vehicles you'll have to replace the whole shifter mechanism because thats not serviced seperately

From the August issue of GM Teck Link,

Shift Lever Interlock Some 2003-04 Pontiac Aztek models will randomly fail to release the transmission shift handle, and the ignition key must be cycled before the shift handle is enabled. This condition has been identified as a communication issue with the circuits passing through the BCM. At times, the appropriate signal is not understood and the interlock signal is not being sent. This condition is rarely repeated for several key cycles and depends on how many other devices are attempting communications at the same time.

A new Body Control Module (BCM) went into production March 15, 2004 to address this concern. The new part number is 15143352 and replaces 10334030. Only the new part number should be used if the owner is reporting this condition. Service stock for the 10334030 is nearly exhausted and Aztek models for model years 2001-2004 will all be serviced using the new part.

Gear shift won't move out of park

I had this problem last night and thanks to the patience of my wife we found the answer in the owners manual. Lift out the front cup holder(this is on a 2001 I assume it is the same for 2002). On the gear shift side of the area under the cup holder there is a little door (3/8" x 2") that slides off to expose the gear shift lock. Reach in with said little door and depress the white tab and you are good to go!
I know this is long after the original post but hopefully this will help somebody.
