a 2003 Pontiac vibe? We drive a 4cylinder automatic.

It depends how much gas is left in the tank. Running a fuel injected car that low on fuel could damage the pump

I'm curious about this, too. I've gone about 20-24 miles after the light came on before I got too nervous about getting stuck. The manual says it's a 13 gal tank, but if I run it low and dry like that, I usually only fit <12 gal in it. That makes me think I can go another 20 or so before I really run out.

you should be more nervous about burning out your fuel pump. Light comes on, stop at your nearest gas station

I doubt you'll burn your in-tank fuel pump up if you run out of fuel. Think about what happeneds... If the engine dies if you run out of fuel, gets into a car crash OR it fails to start even if the tank is full of fuel, the computer shuts the pump down if it gets no input that the engine is running.

Still running out of gas is NOT good. That last bit of gas it did pick up may have also picked up dirt from the bottom of the tank. And where is the filter? Inside the tank on most in-tank fuel systems. Very costly to replace.

When my fuel light comes on I high tale it to the nearest station.

How to tell exactly how far you can drive after the fuel indicator light comes on

Here's how to tell exactly how many miles you can drive after the fuel indicator light comes on:
1) Put some gas in your tank and drive until the fuel indicator light comes on, then write down the mileage.
2) Drive until the engine stops running, then write down the mileage.
3) Subtract the mileage in Step 1 from the mileage in Step 2.
You'll now have the answer to your question.
:D

A better way would be to find out how big the tank is, then fill it when the light comes on. Subtract that # fron the tank capacity and that's how much is left in the tank. Take that times your mpg. That is how far you can go. Much easier on the pump than running it dry.

I've put 76 Kms on my gas light before deciding not to take the risk on my 04 vibe. YOLO
