If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "1995 Trans Am" isn't going to indicate to anybody that you need help. However, "Need help with my 1995 Trans Am" will. Be as descriptive as you can. Please use common sense... Hey everyone. i am new to this forum. But I am on the Cobaltss.net forum. I just bought a 2003 Pontaic Grand Am 3.4 v6 88500miles. Just trying to learn more about it. I know right now I have a collant leak underneath my intake manifold, what could this be.

Thanks
Mike

Welcome , well it sounds like you have the old classic dex cool gasket eating problem sounds as if you need a new intake manifold gasket , I would also check your heads to see if they are leaking . Good luck keep us posted , also as long as the coolant is leaking on the outside you can plan your fix but if it is leaking on the inside then it will do more damage . Oil and water don't mix .

Why would they keep using dex cool if they eat the gasket. When i look at the heads i would look to see if they are leaking from the sides or would i be checking for something more.

Thanks
Mike

To check the heads there are few ways to check :yes look at the outside for any signs of leakage ,this may be the most common is to check the oil for antifreeze or get an oil analysis and I also heard of getting the heads pressure checked at a shop, never saw this done but have heard of it.I once owned an 97 suburban with dex cool it actually ate through the intake manifold (it was a plastic manifold ) there were little pit marks in the plastic that was leaving in a little bit of antifreeze ,you could smell it in the exhaust ,it smelt sweet also in pa we have to do an emissions test(tail pipe) once a year and the hydrocarbons were high but to answer your question about this dex cool some people have problems and some people don't but I do hear a lot about it ,gm did change there gasket make-up a while back to address this problem and also a lot of mechanics change back to the greenish/yellowish antifreeze. Hope this helps .

This dex cool stuff sounds like it is just some bad stuff. Should i get this fixed asap or could this hold off for a while and just make sure my levels on the anitfreeze are fine. This really wouldnt be an expensive fix for the gasket. Could i just drain the anitfreeze for the time being and just put something else in besides that stuff.

Thanks for the help
Mike

Mike you better check with your mechanic ,if it were me i would fix problem then change over . If you wait I would keep an eye on the antifreeze level and the oil (making sure no water gets in there ) . How is the water temp now when you drive it ? I guess it all depends how much is leaking and where it is leaking as to how long you have before it does damage . Do you have to add any antifreeze ? And how much ?

I dont have it on the road yet. I have been just going out and starting it because of the cold weather and checking to see if it is burning it with the little stroll down the driveway. I will check with my mechanic and see what he says.
