I was hoping someone might have some insight.

I drive a work car that is a 2004 Pontiac GrandPrix GT. Every once in a while, the car just shuts off on the highway when i'm doing 65-85 mph. I have to struggle to get it off to the side of the road, and it is dangerous. Then the car will usually start again in 5-15 minutes. Sometimes the car shuts off and the electonics work, sometimes it shuts off and all power is lost.

The work mechanics have looked at it several times, they usually do something dumb like change the air filter.

This problem is not safe! Anyone experience this or hear of it? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Try having someone check your crank shaft sensor -- it's in a very vulnerable spot, and I've already been thru two of them in my 2000 GTP. It will die for no reason at any given moment, and sometimes won't restart immediately, or may restart right away if you put it in neutral and give it a crank. I went a year getting stranded for thirty minutes or an hour here and there & spending money on mechanics before we found it. Trouble is, you can't hook it up to a machine and diagnose it because you have to be hooked up to the computer when it happens in order for it to catch it -- and even then most times it won't.

Also check the battery cables at the terminals.. If one of the bolts is even a half turn loose, this can happen (loss of all electric).
