My 2004 2.2 Sunfire with 130,000 miles started throwing an occasional Po171 code (Bank 1 lean) a month ago. The light would come about once a week, stay on a day or so and go out. No driveability problems were noted when it came on.
Last weekend we took a 200 mile each way road trip. On the way there, and while we were there, the car ran great and no check engine lights. When we left for the return trip the check engine light came on accelerating away from a stop sign. About 50 miles later and about the fourth stop sign later the car stalled at a stop sign. It restarted on the second attempt and ran fine down the highway about 4 miles then the tach dropped to 0 and it stalled. I coasted to the side of the road. It restarted again on the second try and we went another 5 miles down the road before it stalled again. Over the next 40 miles it stalled again about 8 more times. It always restarted on the first to third attempt. We were getting 3 to 5 miles down the road each time before it stalled. We were trying to limp the car into the next major city. About 20 miles from that city it quit stalling and drove fine the next 110 miles home.
The next day I took it to get the code read and the check engine light went off before I got to the auto parts store.
The only code stored again was Po171. I have driven the car two days since with no check engine lights or problems.
Now I am afraid to take this car out on any road trips. Any idea where I should start?:confused:

Has no one ever had their 2.2 just quit running on the highway ??? 73 people have viewed this post and the only reply is a generic OBD code list.:(:mad:

did you do anything that the link suggested? did you check your fuel pressure? did you clean the MAF? did you check for a vacuum leak? did you check your fuel pump relay?

the link says it all. you most likely have a ignition problem..your spark goes out when it gets to hot..you need to check all ignition related problems

or a fuel problem..you really need to do a complete tune up..fuel filter clean the throttle body out real good..and see what happens..

Your right Roadrunner no MAF on the 2004. I have looked for a vacuum leak ever since the first Po171 code with both smoke and a spray can of carb cleaner. No leaks found. It would take one hell of a vacuum leak to cause the lastest problem of a total stall at highway speed. I think a vacuum leak large enough to stall an engine at 60 mph would cause a large sucking sound. After I got home from the trip where the car stalled a dozen times or more I checked the fuel pressure and it was 45 with the engine running. I left the gauge hooked up for two weeks of driving in case it stalled I could pop the hood and see if I had fuel pressure.
Well after a dozen stalls on the road trip two weeks ago, the Sunfire ran great around town the last two weeks going to work and back and running errands. Friday I swapped the fuel pump relay with the AC relay and changed the fuel filter. When I took out the old fuel filter, dark gray cloudy gas ran out from both sides of the filter. I think my problem may have been a fuel filter that was to old coming apart on the inside. If that cloudy gray fuel was sometimes going to the injectors it may have caused the Po171 codes, lean fuel condition and possibly been stalling the engine. I didn't try blowing thru the new filter before I installed it, but with the old filter i can blow thru it either way and feel almost no resistance. I am on another road trip now with the car and have traveled 300 miles with no check engine codes or stalls. Wish me luck that it keeps running and I get back home with it tomorrow. :);)
