Hi, I have a 99 grand am 2.4 that just started make noise while the engine is at a slightly higher RPM than idle and its driving me crazy that I can't figure it out... I'm thinking a piston but am not sure It sounds great at idle but as soon as you rev it up it sounds like its knocking like metallic sounding... If anyone has any thoughts on this please help... Thanks Ed

really difficult to diagnos over the internet, how many miles on the engine? are you sure the noise isnt coming from the front of the engine indicating a timing chain or tensioner? Did you pull off the valve cover to check for a bad rocker arm or cam?

to rule out the fan belt, spray some water on the belt and pulleys. and notice if it goes away temporarily.

The engine only has 70,000 miles on it... I'm going pull the the valve cover today and see what it looks like in their... The noise actually sounds like it coming from the back side near the trans...

I'll. give it a try but the noise sounds like its coming from the back side near the trans...

The noise is parked when revving the engine and also when we drive it...

That pretty much rules out the drive train. Typically, the belt tends to be noisier when idle or when accelerating, but test that just to rule it out as well as checking your auxiliaries for a loose pulley. If the belt seems ok, pull the valve cover and see if you have a loose rocker arm.
