Engine Knock

Hi,

So today I was driving on the highway and was switching lanes and the got revved up the engine pretty good to do so, and then when I let off the gas the engine started running really rough. It has lost a lot of power.

It is making a knocking noise as well. The knocking is not too bad when it is at idle but when I give it a little gas (2-3k rpm's) it knocks pretty good.

When I put it in reverse in the street and put it into drive to pull the car into my driveway it died.

Also the knocking, sounds like it is coming from the front cylinder on the far right. (The cylinder on the drivers side if you are looking at it from the other way.)

Any ideas??

Assuming you are talking about a 6 cylinder it could be related to a rocker arm but you will have to isolate the source of the noise. Is it coming from the valve cover?

I am not sure of the exact location, but it does sound like it could be coming from the valve cover.

Actually now that you mention it, that would make sense about the rocker arm. That would definitely make a knocking noise and if a rocker was out of position it would lose power because it would act like a dead cylinder.

I would like to apologize for the issues that you are experiencing with your vehicle. Have you been able to get this issue diagnosed? If you have not, I would recommend that you contact your local GM dealer to have them look into this for you. They may be in the best position to get this issue diagnosed for you. I have an idea that I am surprised has not been mentioned.
My first suspicion is that you have a spun bearing on a connecting rod. If Pontiac saw the importance of installing REAL GAUGES instead of idiot lights, you would notice low oil pressure too.

You need your engine rebuilt or replaced, if it is what I suspect. If you keep driving on it, it will get worse and can even throw a rod, which won't hesitate to exit right out of the side of the engine block.
