Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have noticed recently that I have an oil substance in my coolant reservoir. The engine isn't overheating. My 2000 Grand AM GT has 156k miles on it. I bought it with 134k and at 141k I had to replace the Intake Manifold Gasket due to coolant in my oil (the opposite situation that has occurred now)

3.4 L Automatic 6 cyl.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any insight as to what this might be and a price range/ guide to do this myself if the cost of labor outweighs the value of the car.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Are you losing coolant? I would suggest doing a coolant pressure test if you are, and a good cooling system flush if it's not leaking. You probably should do a compression test as well. If the cooling system hasn't been flushed, it could just be some sludge in the reservoir.

I may be losing coolant but if I am it's not dripping onto the ground. I'm getting a compression test tomorrow to see what the verdict is. I hope it's just gunk from a poorly performed flush. If it's the head gasket or cracked head than I can't put anymore money into it and will sadly part it out :\ It's been a fun car..

If it is a dark colored substance it may not be oil but deteriorated Dex Cool.

It was indeed a blown head gasket. I traded my GT in yesterday. Sorry to say that I was putting in more money than what the car was worth.

Nice car...congrats!
