I need to remove the back plate of the timing belt to access the water pump. however, I need to remove the lower crankshaft wheel. How do I do this... not able to get it loose ????

Holding crankshaft timing gear on Sunbird 2.0
It is difficult to keep that crankshaft gear from turning. For other cars, there are wrench-like tools that have holes in them that you can bolt onto the gear. I couldn't find one to fit the Sunbird 2.0, so I made my own with a drill, a grinder and some angle iron. I've attached two pictures.

Well on mine I just wedged a wrench and a pipe that was on the center bolt. Mine has 4 outer bolts that hold that on as well and are 13mm so I got those out. Now comes the easy part for the center bolt.
Put a breaker bar on the center bolt socket and put it against the ground (yes the pipe and wrench will work if you don't have the breaker bar) the grab your key and go inside and give the key a slight turn to crank the engine. The bolt will come out easy as cake every time. This is a very old but wise trick a lot of mechanics do.
But if your not that worried about how stuff looks and are smart enough to not put your fingers in a moving camshaft cog then just omit the cover all together. It keeps you from having to take the back cover off if you just cut it down. That cover does two things jack and shit. Sorry but it really may only extend the life of the belt slightly. But its being replaced anyway. A ton of people claim it will keep dirt off the belt.........really??
But I look at it like if I am unlucky enough for a pebble to make it past the wheel shield, AC belt, and drive belt and wedge itself under the belt to skip a tooth I probably deserve to pay for a tow lol.
The reason it isn't as important in these engines is they are Non-interference engines. So if it skips a tooth or you run it with the timing off a bit its not gonna bend the valves. That only happens on interference engines.
And there I go again with a long winded explanation lol.

Air impact will take it off without spinning the crank also.

Yeah thats the ultimate way to do it. Forgot about impact wrench. I wish I could afford the compressor cause I'd have a shit load of air tools. They truly are the way to go if you have one.

Still have my old late 80's Coleman 11 gallon. Just replaced the regulator before I left AZ. ( used an universal one from Home Depot to fix it)
Just enough power to do anything except a die grinder. ( spotty use)
A bunch used compressors on craigslist to get you by for a while.................
Want to upgrade to something bigger when I build a shop someday.
