Where would i be able to find a turbo kit for 1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.1L Turbo, or would i need to have one custom made? and is it worth Turboing it? in good shape, plan on flashing the chip after installing the turbo.

Wait, was your engine originally turbocharged? Are you looking for a replacement turbo or are you looking to add a turbo to a normally aspirated engine?

If the latter, then good shape is important, but also the actual measured compression of your engine and the amount of boost pressure you intend must be calculated if you want more than just a few blazing accelerations before critical meltdown occurs.

How many miles does your engine have on it? If your seats and rings have any weakness at this point, it won't take too much boost to turn those weaknesses into problems.

As far as finding a turbo kit for it, I'm sure you can find something with a diligent Internet search.

its got quite a few miles on it, 260k. much of the engine has been replaced somewhat recently, and yes it was the latter, never had a turbo on it. I feel the engine is in good shape. have been meaning to break down the engine and do a through inspection, but haven't found the time. First time delving into turbo's and super's so I wanted to ask before I did anything.

Not sure what you exactly mean by "much of the engine has been replaced" but 260k plus a turbo is a good way to all of the engine being replaced. You have cast pistons with a compression too high for a turbo, you have a cast crank and rods, not a good combo for suddenly adding lot of additional horsepower. With a turbo you either do it right or dont even try.

okay. thanks for the warning. guess i'll go with my second option and get a new(used) car that can handle it, like an escort or a civic. sad that pontiac isnt around anymore.

why do you think they can handle it without similar preparation, correct pistons, rods, crank, etc.?

it's not that i think they can handle it without similar preparation, it's that i'm 20 and I have friends who know more about those cars, and unless you guys think it would be worth the preparation and costs, i will just go another direction.

Well if you want a 3.1 turbo that is already put together look for a 1989 - 1990 Grand prix mclaren turbo edition it has the 3.1 with intercooled turbo that has potential of 500hp with just a T5 turbo upgrade and a few other mods I know I had a 89 that was pushing 450 hp and could light up the tires at 40 mph it was a real sleeper car and won a lot of races with it!
