curious if anyone can advise which is a high chance of happening..
the 3.4L jumping time (166K miles) or
the crank shaft sensor (the 24X) I believe going bad
I have replaced all coil packs and the ignition control module which must have been bad as it did not fire. I put back on the original on which it tried to crank but backfires. so I stopped. I have replaced the Cam sensor also..

I am thinking of getting a scan tool with live data in hope to find out if anything electrical is wrong.

any ideas or advice?

Thank You

Knowing the codes and making sure you have fuel pressure using a gauge would be the thing to try.

have Innova 3160B being delivered today.. hope to get to the bottom of this
Thanks

PS.. I installed the original ignition module and the car fired but still coughed of back fired.. I stopped till I get the scan tool today. It does have fuel pressure.. I hope to know more after work today.. Again Thanks!

Definitely get a scanner so u have a clue of where to start troubleshooting it.
I also own a 3.4 l Pontiac (1999) and currently has 162k miles on it.
about 2.5 years ago i had to do some serious troubleshooting to get it to pass smog. ended up having 6 different codes popping up and one by one i solved them all. there is this site that helped me...(a home mechanic with little experience) solve all my code problems and car has ran great since.
For detailed trouble shooting of your 3.4 l engine then i strongly suggest reading here.

Btw to answer your question....very high chance of both. (after all...it is a G.M. 3.4L engine) =)
