87 Sunbird Turbo GT Convertible

I saw one of these on youtube. definitely one of pontiacs finer moments. If there is such a thing lmfao

917 is the total turbo A/T convertibles for '87?
WOW! I had no idea there were so few of them. I'm just curious...what was the price on the one you mentioned a few days ago?

Welcome to the Forum..............

I think they were asking $ 5400 if I can remember correctly .(It had low miles and was in perfect condition , looks like it was eldery owned)

I heard the autos were more durable than the sticks on the turbo cars, even though the TH125's had their own issues .

Correct! break it down by options and color it will be way less........Doug in P.R.

I'd sure like to see the breakdown on options, etc. Would that info be on the heritage site mentioned earlier? I'd like to spend lots of time looking up the details; however, time is sure limited so questions are easier..
BTW - American built cars had their VINs start with #1, Canadian built cars with #2.

I had several Sunbird demos. In fact, we were driving a new red coupe when we went to Cincinnati to see Pete Rose break T Cobb's record.

Many thanks.

I reread the post, you are correct, good luck with getting that information!

Thanks, Guys.
Any and all info will help at this point.

I don't recall any GT convertibles at the dealership I was at. Memory serves me well sometimes; other times, well...Anyway, I'm sure we had them because we had 2 major GM plants in Anderson, and with all the program cars that went through our service department, surely there were some.
We had plenty convertibles, tho.
I do remember that once Pontiac changed the '86 1.8 turbo to the 2.0 turbo, and since the '87 Sunbird was huge on warranty problems with the new fuel system for '87, the boss ordered most GTs with the turbo delete. Warranty glitches did bring about changes of what we had in stock to sell.

Our '87 is still sitting on my friend's car hauler trailer inside his building. I have a building where I plan on hiding it until my wife's retirement time and until I can get started on its engine. The big issue at the moment, though, is the fast air leak in the left front. We aired it, and by the time we got it loaded, it was flat again.
A stat that probably is nearly impossible to compute is the amount of the Fiero-style 14" alum wheel Pontiac sold. When they came out in the fall of '83, we thought it was the hot number. Look at what many normal wheels are now?

Motor blown or just wont start , Dave ?

Good morning, Doug.
The motor's seized which is the report I received from the fellow I purchased it from. He owns a trailer park and took the car, such as it is, in on a delinquent trailer rent.
Since the turbo is (was) lubricated from the crankcase oil, and if the turbo itself had a problem (broke), it then could have pulled all the oil from the motor leaving little in the case. I just haven't had the opportunity to get it into my building and to check it out.
I did find an internet source for the motor, but it ain't cheap, that's for sure.
Thanks Doug and everyone else, too, for your interest in this car. I hope to get to it soon.
As I said at the very beginning, I hope to have it ready for my wife's retirement time. Spring 2014 possibly; she's not sure. She (we) have great benefits, she's a school teacher, and she isn't ready to give up on the benefit pkg which is a huge decision in this day and age, eh?

Just a rebuilt Turbo is Expensive! Seen motors for about $1700 I'd research a little to make sure you are getting an actual Turbo Block, not a regular one. ( not sure it has a steel crank and rods and forged pistons from the factory?)

I'm about 4.5 years away from full retirement myself....Cant wait!:D

Glad I was smart about my future, so I can retire before SS kicks in.

Not all blocks are the same ( boss drilled and tapped for turbo oil feed line)

Crank and rods are cast ( same on both)

Pistons are forged with dish ( 8.0 compression vs 8.8 non turbo)

Head is different for the Turbo Motor
