Hey I have a 69 lemans gto judge clone....
Right now I have a 10 bolt 2.56 in the rear that has a bad race.
I can buy a 12 bolt 3.42 posi rear completely rebuilt in beautiful condition for $800. It was on a chevelle... Will it fit mine? I think so but not sure
Is it worth it for me to swap out?
Will that housing fit a bigger setup if I wanted to go bigger later?

I also have a 71 cutlass rear that's a 2.56. It has a bent axel...

Is it better to just fix the race in my existing rear?
swap to the cutlass rear and replace the axel?
or completely swap out to the new bigger rear?

I would do the Chevelle swap. You may have to change the rear u-joint on the driveshaft, otherwise should be a straight-up swap. Assuming it's the same year or a '68-'72 diff.

That's the type of diff I want to get for our '68 Le Mans, it has a perfectly fine open 2.52.

My birthday is coming up, who wants to give me a nice differential? Or I'll take $500 towards a different one.

Steve

When you are referring to the Chevelle you do mean a complete axle assembly not just a differential carrier assembly?

Its a complete axel assembly and differential.

Would it work and is it worth the price?

It should work 12 bolt Chevy/Pontiac are interchangeable. Prices you should check ebay etc to see what the going asking price is. Try to open the cover before buying to check the condition of everything unless you have other proof that it was rebuilt.

saw a similar one on ebay for $2,500! Holy crap!!!!!

Heres the one Im thinking of buying

I swapped the 2.73 rear in my 72 Lemans with a 3.36 rear from a 66 Lemans. If your Chevelle rear is 66 or older, it'll be a couple of inches narrower and you'll need 64-66 A body coil springs and mounts. Other than that, it'll fit with no problem.

I see in your picture the coil spring pad is correct for your car. Disregard what I said about changing your coil springs. It should all swap over with no issues.

My birthday is March 2nd, if you are feeling generous, I'd use that diff for my '68 Le Mans.
