Ok I took some pictures of my 455 motor on my 1970 Ponitac Catlina. Finally she is purring like a Kitten except for the choke not opening up all the way but the car still runs great. The only other issue is that when the car sits over night it takes a while to start up. Like there is no gas in the Carburator. Maybe its the fuel pump so I bought I new one. Will replace it on Wednesday.

This last one is the Relay I installed to make the Ignition run at 12 Volts.

did you ever check the choke adjustments I mentioned in the earlier post, the length of the chole rod with respect to the hole in the chole linkage when cold and the choke pulloff adjustment. What intake manifold are you using and did you block the exhaust crossover. These items will effect cold start not the fuel pump.

I tried to adjust it but I dont see how, I will take a good picture of it today and posted maybe I am missing something. I am using the stock manifold. Where is the Exhaust crossover exactly at?

Looking good Big Kat!

You may want to put a cap over that open A/C line to keep contaminants out. You may want to reconnect it some day.

Starting an engine with fuel injection is as simple as turning the key, but on those older engines with carb and choke, you have to get a little crafty sometimes.

There should be gas in your float bowl first thing in the morning. You might try this;
Key in the ignition, pump the gas pedal to the floor once, then turn to start. If that doesn't do it, try pumping the pedal twice.

It just needs that initial bit of gas to get going for the first time. If you flood it, press and hold the accelerator to the floor and crank it. That should open your choke plate and allow air into the engine to clear out some of the gas fumes.

Melsg5: here are some pictures of the rod, I dont see how it can be adjusted.

This is as far as this opens

Here are some more pictures.

I also just noticed that in te back of the carburator it looks like there is a line suppose to go there, maybe I missed something.

Ok so I purchased this mechanical fuel pump from summitt racing just in case.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crt-m4885/media/instructions

It says free flow 40gph maximum pressure 5.5 to 6.5 psi. I am thinking maybe because of the new MSD distributor and 8.5 wires its buring allot cleaner and it leaves no gas in the float bowel. By the way where is the float bowel?

you are missing the cover for the choke coil. It probably isnt getting hot enough to release the choke
You adjust by removing the small clip and disconnecting the rod, with the engine fully cold. Under those conditions if you pull up on the rod does it line up with the hole or is it lower or higher? You want it to be slightly higher.
Again with the engine cold and the choke fully closed if you push in the rod on the choke pulloff how much does it open the choke. Should be about .025 using feeler gauges. You should try and get the factory manual with all the adjustments listed in it

OK I put back the cover for the choke. I disconected the rod with the engine cold and its slightly higher. It took me a while to get the car started last night. I pumped the pedeal twice then held it all the way to the floor and turned the key. I did this several times and no start. I pumped the gas pedal like 10 times then it finally started. Once the car gets started its fine. I turned the engine off after staring it and just turned the key to see if it would start without touching the gas pedal and it started like a dream. The car only does this when it sits over night. When I get home today I will try to start it again to see what happens?

I been looking for a manuel for all the adjustments but have not had any luck finding one that has the carburator adjustments for the 70 Pontiac Catalina

have you adjusted the fast idle? when the car does start cold what is the initial idle speed? you are not supposed to hold the pedal to the floor after pumping it twice. The float bowl is inside the carburetor and the ignition isnt going to cause the float bowl to run out of gas. The adjustments for the carburetor are a chapter in the 1970 Pontiac Service Manual. You can get a copy from www.amesperf.com

The reason why you cannt figure out how to adjust the choke rod is because you have the wrong one. It is not supposed to straight. It should have an S curve in the center to permit you to adjust it.

Oh! ok, but thats the one that came with the car. Where can I find the one with the S curve?

That book has a whole chapter on all the different carburetors for 1970. The correct rod is available from www.amesperf.com and other Pontiac vendors.

I think this is the rod you want;

That should be it along with the factory manual. Have you noticed if that section of the intake manifold where the choke coil sits gets REALLY hot? Exhaust gas is supposed to pass through that section of the intake manifold to help atomize incoming fuel and heat the choke, it is the exhaust crossover.
