2006 Pontiac Torrent Turnsignal Switch Malfunctioning

Hi all,
I have a 2006 pontiac torrent that recently acquired a problem with the turnsignals. The problem is when i turn on the left turn signal to make a left turn the turn signal does not shut off over 50% of the time. The right signal fubctions properly. I think it may need a new switch. My question is the the steering wheel have to be removed? Or can i access it through the housing that surrounds the steering wheel assembly. Any help here would be greatly appriciated.

I have the same problem in a 2007 Torrent, except ours occurs after right turns. It won't self cancel. It was hit or miss for a while and now it NEVER self cancels after a right turn. Taking it to the shop in a few weeks to try and remedy that, as well as the airbag idiot light that I think is caused by a bad seat sensor in the passenger front seat.
 
Here is how I think mine broke twice. If you are making a slight turn and you hold the turn signal on so it does not shut of the plastic sounds like it breaks inside.

So now I am careful to hold the handle gently on such turns. I do not see how GM could have missed such an obvious flaw.

Has anybody tried to make the repair. Does the wheel need to be pulled?

Pontiac signal switch

I had a lot of smoke coming out of my signal switch and steering column had to call fire department. Its in the garage. Is their anyone else that had the same problem.
 
I had this happen to my '07 Torrent and it was an extremely easy fix. The turn signal switch has a piece of plastic in it that broke off preventing the spring from disengaging the turn signal. I ordered the replacement from amazon. It was cheaper than the dealership and local parts store. It took 5 minutes max to uninstall the old one and install the new one. So glad I just found this forum! I am ordering that part immediately for my 2007 Torrent. The dealership told me this part was going to cost $350 and that does _not_ include labor. What a joke!!

Pep-Boys almost literally STOLE over $800 from me. No lie! They told me this part was $355.05 and the labor would $363.00 for 3.6 default hours worth of labor even though that would have it fixed in at least 2 hours....WTF!! Only $117.62 with free shipping from Amazon. The entire piece is only 8 bolts. Unreal, highway robbery. Shame on you Pep-Boys!

I know...old thread...just thought I would chime in with my experience.

had the same issue until last night when I finally broke down and took the switch out. The copper looking spring inside the assembly that forces the plastic piece out was a bit bowed. Pulled it out and straightened it...now it works perfect again. Glad I didn't have to buy a new one!

thank you for posting, amazon is delivering mine today.

UPDATE: works, almost as easy as described, although re-assembly can take longer if you cant get the screw holes lined up. 3 screws and the bottom half is actually two parts that are a bit stiff. took about a hour real time plus futzing with some other unrelated parts and minor interruptions in a poorly lit basement garage.

now if i can figure out how to replace the liftgate switch. rusty screws!
