Hello, my wife has a 2005 Pontiac Montana SV6 6Cylinder with roughly 120,000 miles on it. I noticed while checking the fluids in it the transmission fluid was thin and watery I guess you can say. We have had the van for about 3 years now and I have never changed it and I have no idea if it has ever been changed. I have heard some people say that if it has never been changed then don't bother changing it because you are almost certain that the transmission will go south. Others have said, that is not true and an old wise man tale. So what are your thoughts on this? Its a good van and my wife really loves it so I need to make sure that it last for quite some time. I keep up on all of the other maintenance on it like oil changes and such. I am just curious about these different stories that I get. Also, if I do change it how many quarts does it take for a drain and fill? Thanks for your time.

I would drop the pan, clean and change the filter and refill the fluid. It should say how much fluid in ur owners manual under capacities. Good luck keep us posted.

Thanks for the advice. Going to change it as soon as I get up in the morning.

just wanted to follow up on this old post. I changed the filter and fluid back whenever I started this thread. So several months have passed since I have done that. Now for some reason it seems like I am having some issues. Sometimes not all the time it seems like the transmission jerks hard when taking off from a stop sign or a red light. Also again sometimes not all the time it will shift hard from first to second. Any thoughts or does anyone know of a thread that this has been discussed before. Fluid is full and not leaking and is still clean.

assuming you do not have a check engine light on and the speedometer is working, it sounds like a shift solenoid issue.

That is correct. I have no check engine light on and the speedometer is working correctly.

Where is the shift solenoid? Is this something that could be done without taking it to a shop and costing an arm and a leg? The part isn't that expensive.

couple of things come to mind, fluid level and type.1 double check the level of your fluid it can be tricky sometimes maybe it wasnt level before or warm and maybe its low? 2 did it slip before? if not then did you put in the correct type? (dextron) . Hopefully it's just low or only slipped once and now she's good. Good luck

I have a 2003 with 180,000 on it and bought it used 3 years ago with about 120,000 and my tranny has always slipped and sort of getting worse but what I have been doing is from time to time I change out the fluid and filter and add Lucas anti slip tranny additive fluid from wally world and baby the throttle . I have been milking it for about 3 years now lol.

I check the fluid all time and it is always where it should be. I did use the correct fluid. It never slipped until I did the flush. This was why I started this thread several months ago because I heard if it has never been changed then don't change it or else you will soon have problems. Some say that is a myth and some say otherwise but here I am with some issues. Maybe not related to the drain and fill or maybe just coincidence. Who knows
