I recently attempted to install an aftermarket head unit in my 03 Aztek. Basic Trim, 6 speakers. I cut the wires and connected them to the new unit. The head unit will power on but there isn't any sound coming from the speakers. I can't locate the factory amp, if there is one. There is a fuse for it though. I made sure 12V are going to the "radio on" wire" and "amp wire". Does anyone have any ideas?

On another note would the Class II data wire make any difference? I have that one capped off.

No I didn't, I cut off the original harness and spliced directly. I was aware that I would lose the chimes as they come from the factory radio but would it cause me to lose all sound as well?

is the radio new or used, if used how do you know it is in working condition? How did you know how to wire it?

The unit is brand new. I found a wire diagram that I followed. I have done this before but never had this much trouble. I am wondering if GM/Pontiac has some kind of module or something in the factory unit preventing sound.

the Pontiac base radio should be totally self contained, have you used a test light on the speaker output on the new radio?

No, I have a multi meter and there isn't any voltage on the output. I was told by a friend that Pontiac uses a module of some kind that will power the speakers from the factory head unit and with out this I won't get sound. Any validity to that claim?

so you have already determined the radio is not putting anything out, if the radio has a CD player did you try that, if you still have no output from the radio the problem is the radio. Your friend does realize you have a basic system no external amp with 10 speakers? Do you have a fuse in position 38 of the interior fuse box? Look at this link and see what code you have it lists what codes have external amps

I just posted on the Grand Am forum about factory stereo system linked to the VIN by the BCM in my '04. Even when I tried a replacement factory system, it worked on the test bench, but no power when installed. As I recall, it worked in the "accesory" key position, but not in "run." I was told you have to pay to have a GM Tech 2 device match the new stereo to the VIN.

So yes, maybe the Class II (data) wire is causing a problem.
