72 Lemans ECS

Hello again,
How do you tell if your car has ECS? I am looking at ordering Fuel lines and want to ensure that I order the correct ones. The car has been apart for years and I'm trying to get it back together. It does have some sort of canister behind where the rear seat goes that has lines that I assume go to the fuel tank area. Is this the ECS system?

I have a 1971 GTO that also has that fuel vapor separator. The car was originally purchased in the state of New York so that component is standard in all states except perhaps California which may or may not have additional components. From what I see ECS stands for Emissions Control System so that doesn't explain much since by 1971 all cars had the evaporative control system and emissions systems. I would contact the seller of the parts to ask them what the difference is. You doent have a copy of the AIM, assembly instruction manual or the factory Chasis Service Manual?

I don't have one yet. I have ordered a copy but will not be home to look at it until January. I am trying to order parts and have them there for when I return so I can work on it. My wife is there to receive the parts.

On second thought I think ECS might mean Evaporative Control System which would mean your car having the fuel vapor separator does have that feature. Have you tried to get the original papers for the car from www.phs-online.com ? Do you still have the original emissions sticker found on the plastic panel between the bumper and radiator support?

I have not submitted for the PHS yet but am planning to. I do have the sticker but it is unreadable unfortunately. I was able to find out that it does have the ECS system on it. All 1972 domestic cars have an ECS to capture the fuel tank vapors. Some of the 1971 California cars had this system but it became mandatory for all domestic cars in 72. The canister behind the seat on one in the engine compartment are part of the system. My car was missing the one in the engine compartment when I got it. The joys of restoring cars.
