I'm considering converting the idiot lights on my 70 Lemans to gauges and was wondering how difficult this project is for a beginner (me) and will I need to replace all of the wiring and sending units?

Any suggestions on particular manufacturers that offer replica gauges would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

look at the GTO catalog from www.amesperf.com, not much wiring but sending units such as oil are changed

Great question. I was thinking of doing the same thing to my 71 lemans. Let me know how hard or difficult it is if you get time to do it?

Hi cmoore,

Just curious - any update on your project?

I want to do the same thing to my 66 Lemans. I want to retain the idiot lights and convert to gauges. Let me know how you did.

Thanks

Al

The original poster is not retaining the idiot lights. If you want to keep the idiot lights you will have to install aftermarket gauges under the dashboard or along the A pillar.

I haven't started the swap out yet. Waiting on new gauges to arrive. I'll let you know how it went once I'm done.

That's correct. I'm replacing the idiot lights with gauges that are factory replicas.

It is basicly a straight conversion, you just have to swap out the senders for the Oil Pressure and Coolant Temp with the Gauge type. The only thing you need to do with the wiring is swap 2 wires at the conector at the gauges. (unfortunately I cant find the diagram I have for the 68-70's) Basicly because the idiot lights are tested each time you start the car, it will Peg all the gauges on the high side during the test. This can damage the gauges. Otherwise the wiring is the same. If I can find the diagram I have I will post it.

Finally got the gauges in and got to the task of removing the dash. Thanks for all the advice offered as it was very helpful in getting the dash off. We took out the drivers seat, and dropped the steering wheel and ended up removing the entire dash and not just the section where the gauge cluster resides. Doing this eliminated removing the headlight switch, convertible top switch, cig lighter, etc. The new gauges were installed in the cluster. Haven't put the dash back together yet as I'm going to update my a/c to vintage air and eliminate the vacuum lines and the old controller, etc. While I'm at it, I'm removing the old AM radio and replacing it with a replica unit with Bluetooth, etc. and adding amp, etc. Then we'll put the dash back together. Again thanks for all the advice as it made the dash removal a lot easier. I tried to load some pics but site wouldn't allow it. Sorry.
