pressure is high when I use a refill gauge, compressor is cycling on/off/on very frequently and sounds "labored" when it comes on.

Am i looking at a blockage (like in the orifice tube) or possibly the pressure switch ?

I have all new parts on order but dont want to install the high dollar parts unless I need to.

Hmm - ok, this has developed a little, last night I replaced the compressor, orifice tube and drier. The fault remains the same - I am going to install a new Hi Side pressure switch this evening. Any offering of wisdom would be very much appreciated at this point.

Hi Side pressure switch replace, the situation has improved - slightly, but I now find that the radiator fan is not starting, runs when flicked by hand though - replacing that tonight. Weird thing is that the motor only costs $150 from Pontiac dealer, $65 for the complete assy from the breakers yard and $36 for the motor only from Checker Autoparts - guess where i am going :)

The radiator fan is the cause of your A/C problem. You should check the relay/breaker (the big one towards the back of the car).
You can swap the relay with the other one and if the radiator fan work, then it's the relay.

Agree with Chowawa for the radiator fan being the leading culprit at this point. It should kick on in short order after the A/C is engaged, regardless of engine temperature. Without this fan, the system cannot shed the heat, causing high high-side pressures which will activate the high-side kick-out switch.

One check would be to get going down the highway, where the fan isn't really needed. If the A/C works OK or much improved here - heightens confidence the fan or related circuitry is the problem.

The proper amount of freon is essential - too much or too little will cause problems also.
