02 pontiac montana gas gauge don't work?

I just bought a 02 pontiac montana and the gas gauge goes from full to empty and never actually tells me how much gas I have. Does any1 know what causes this or what I have to replace to fix it.

P.S I have a friend with the same car and theres does it too. any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

it could be a bad sensor in the gas tank
