02 pontiac sunfire

I am not sure if I am posting this correctly, but here we go.. when i would press the gas pedal in I would feel like it was giving out.. like not enough gas was getting to the engine. I put a fuel injector cleaner in and then it started giving out even more and then one day i went outside to start my car and it would start. It turns over just doesnt start. I put extra gas is in because I thought maybe the gas gauge broke . didnt help. My uncle is a mechanic but I live 5 hours away so I called him and the first thing he said is my fuel pump. He told me to take a broom and hit the gas tank under the car with it and then start it .. I did this hesitantly thinking this is not going to work. To my surprise it worked my car started .. def seemed like it wanted to just stall out though. So my question is has anyone had this problem, is it my pump or something else. I do not know much about cars .. just no i need to fix this r title car and get rid of it . any help will be greatly appreciated.

it sounds like you have to replace the pump and fuel filter

Sound like a fuel pump to me. As stated above, be sure to install a new filter as well. Chances are it has never been changed and that is why the pump is now bad.
