'04 Sunfire - Oil leak problems

So, my oil's been leaking for a few weeks and i figured out it was the the o ring on the oil filter housing so I tightened it, and it just spurted out faster so I loosened it and it was just gushing out. Is there a certain method i should be using to tighten it or could the problem lie somewhere else? Thank you in advance.

One thing that you should check is to make sure the old o ring/seal from the old filter isn't stuck to the mounting boss on the engine block. The new oil filter won't seal properly with the old seal between it and the engine. Also never tighten it more than hand tight ( about 1/4 to 1/3 turn after the gasket touches the mount).

If you have an Ecotec engine, the ring is either shot or the cap is damaged. Replace the complete assembly with this NAPA part number or the equivilant BK 7031729. The proper torque for the cap is 18 ft/lbs.
