Good Afternoon,

I own a 1968 Firebird 4 speed Convertible with a non-original 326 engine. I believe the engine is from 1966. It has what I think is a Carter 4bbl AFB Carb. I have an issue, I think with head soak and am in need of a 1/4" phenolic spacer with associated gaskets. My issue is that I can't find the correct size spacer and gaskets. I have attached a photo of the original carb gasket with associated measurements. I can't even a correct replacement gasket.

I have purchased a couple of spacers and gaskets and none had the correct barrel sizes.

Can anyone help me with this, what to get and where to get it?

Thank you!

Is there a number on the Carb? There is almost an endless variation of Carter AFB's & the Newer Edlebrock versions of it. Also are you sure its an AFB? Pictures and the model number will help.

It could also be a Rochester 4G, not to be confused with a Q-jet

Hi,

Thanks for responding. The car is in a different location. I'll look for numbers as soon as I can get over and look at the carb. I don't know for sure what type it is. Just know that it has Carter on the choke housing.

Below are photos I took earlier. Do they help?

Thanks!

Phil

It is a AFB, those links are what I would use looking for gaskets, but the P/N would be good to verify exactly what gasket you need. Also some applications used a stainless steel shim between 2 base gaskets to prevent carb boil over.

But may earlier stock intake/Carbs have that issue with modern gas. The cure is usually a spacer as you have already indicated, so you are probably on the right track.

Good Afternoon,

Thanks for your earlier responses. I got over to the garage and took some photos of numbers and symbols on the carb. Don't know if these will help but they are attached.

There is 1565 along with either 4-620 or 14-620 on the side. There is also 7-235 on the butterfly. There is also CARTER AFB on the back. I also took a picture of the choke housing.

My original gasket had the stainless shim between two thin gaskets.

Does this help and thanks again.

Phil

Is there a number on the driver's side front base of the carb? ( Near the hold down bolt)

Should of been a triangler metal tag on one of the top bolts also but it looks like it is missing.

4620 is a Chrysler AFB carb
