Well, it happened. I finally found what I've been searching for all these years. And it was in one of the most unlikely places - in the beautiful hills of Vermont. I stumbled upon an ad in Craigslist the first day it was posted. It simply said "1968 Firebird convertible. Come and see it." No pictures, no description. So I took a chance, I called the number and was the first one to contact the seller. It was nearby, which was much better than some of the others I had been tracking.
The story goes...it's been off the road since 1979, put away in a garage, untouched for 30+ years. Plates and registration stickers were still intact to confirm the year that it was in storage. The car was a true 1968 400 convertible MATCHING NUMBERS, with manual 3-speed, non-power steering and brakes. The car was in amazingly great shape considering the age, so I paid the asking price of $5500 and put on the trailer and drove away. What a happy day!86000 mile hope to post pic soon.
