Hi all,

I am new to this forum.

Recently, I have been attempting to replace the alternator on my 1970 Catalina but am running into an issues removing the last bolt located behind the power steering wheel.

I am unsure as to how to get the alternator out and would appreciate any advice. My email is aparkhie@gmail.com if you would like to reach out directly.

I assume you mean power steering pump?
Have you removed the alternator belt and moved the alternator all the way in?
From what I recall you have a front and back bolt attached to brackets and the pivot bolt.
Do not recall the power steering pump having to be touched.

If I remember correctly you have to unbolt the power steering pump to remove the lower bolt, you do not have to disconnect the hoses just unbolt the pump and move it to the side. Pictures would help, as there are many variations of alternator mounting brackets year to year, and what equipment was originally installed. Like A/C, Smop pumps, ect......
Also over the 50+ years previous owners can modify the car with other parts. So without actually seeing what you are dealing with, it hard to be sure.

Good luck with it.

Does this look like what you are dealing with?

As I suspected you will have to loosen the power steering pump possibly just enough to rotate it out of the way. Possibly unbolt it completely to move it far enough to get the bolt past the Power steering pulley.

If you remove the PS belt can you push the pump out of the way?
I’m trying to figure out how to do that currently. I unbolted the pulley that the belt lies on but am not sure as to how to loosen the belt itself

Leave pully alone , loosen the front bracket bolts and on the rear of the pump take off nut , the pump should lean forward enough to slide out the lower alt bolt.
