1972 350 specs

I have a 1972 Lemans with a stock 350, all original with 89,000 miles on it and I was wondering if anyone knew how many horses it has and if anyone knew how many mpg it gets?
 
without knowing the engine code about 160 to 175 net HP, the government didnt issue mpg figures in 72 so a guess would be high teens to low twenties.
 
I think the single exhaust has 160 hp, dual exhaust 175 hp. That was the 1st year Pontiac changed the way they rate horsepower. So there's a big difference between 71 and 72 350 engine hp even thought they're pretty much the same.
 
I have single exhaust so I guess I have 160hp, I'm in the process of getting dual exhaust from the cat back, would that help my horsepower?

Yes that will help a little. What kind of performance are you looking for? I have the same year Lemans with a 350 also. I added dual exhaust, 4 bbl intake/carb, and a slightly bigger cam. My car isn't on the road yet so I can't tell you how it performs.
 
I'm really just looking to get it running smoothly, its all original stock 350 2barrel carb, the only thing that's been done is new spark plugs, about everything distributor related, new battery and a new water pump. The problem it's having is some hesitation, worse when cold but it does it all the time. Any ideas on what could be the problem?
 
Maybe a vacuum leak, carb may need rebuild. Did you do anything with fuel system? How is your timing set up?
 
The fuel system is original stock, I haven't checked the timing because I havent had the car long but it may be off a bit, I'm thinking the carb probably does need a rebuild but I'd like to try other alternatives before I go through that since its my daily driver, I also think the choke is running a little high, could that have anything to do with it?

You dont have a cat so there is not such thing as a cat back exhaust for your car. It's either single or dual from the engine to the back. The choke being incorrectly adjusted or stuck would cause the hesitation when cold. In addition the idle mixture screws may effect cold operation.
 
Lol, I didn't notice that comment about the "cat". Melsg5 is correct. There is no catalytic converter on your car. You can keep your stock exhaust manifolds and replace everything else after them. Thats what I did.
 
Whoops, keep in mind I'm 16 and fairly new to working with old cars. Thanks for the info, I'll try working with the choke and see how that affects it
 
get yourself a copy of the factory service manual, you may find it at www.amesperf.com, look in the GTO catalogue

And when you start messing with things, take LOTS of pictures and write down the position of the things you're gonna change. That way you know where you started in case you need to put something back to the way it was. This will save a lot of headaches later.
