Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum, but I'd like to start by saying my name is Albert, I own a 1972 Pontiac LeMans, Luxury Edition. It has a 400 with a turbo 400 trans on it. I've just recently rebuilt the engine, and put a mild cam, and upgraded rocker arms in it, new oil pump, and totally cleaned everything else. I also have the MSD Atomic EFI setup on it, which for the most part is nice, but I'm having issues with it, which I was hoping to get answered or directed somewhere that I could find the answer to my problems.

What I would really like to know is.. I want to swap out the trans for a newer one with overdrive, I don't know what trans of what cars would match up to my engine, and whether I'd have to alter the driveshaft or not also...

PLEASE HELP!!

- Albert

Look into the 200R4 or 700R4. You will need an adaptor to mate to a Pontiac block. Depending on what cam you put in you may have to consider stall speeds. This site has lots of information.

The crossmember will need to be moved back a little and probably a new driveshaft. The 200 and 700 are pretty much the same. But the 700 has a lower first gear. It is considered the large car tranny.

The 2004r will bolt right up to your motor. What rear end gear do you have now and why do you want to swap your transmission?

I got a 700r4 from Bowtie Overdrives in CA. They have a bell housing option where they with cut off the existing chevy pattern and bolt a universal bell housing (which is stronger and SFI approved) that will fit BOP with no spacers, shims, etc. It is an additional $500 bucks, but worth it for piece of mind, plus a lower 1st gear. I have a 455 with 3.55 gears in my LeMans and in my opinion the 700r4 has longer gears which better suit a torquier engine. Please post more about the MSD Atomic EFI. I am curious as to switching over for the easy of driving.
