I have a 1979 Pontiac Bonneville Base Coupe in pretty good condition. It has the 4.9 301 V8 2bbl. I'm wondering if I can pump up the motor with some parts to give it some more giddy up, or should I just invest In a total motor swap? Also, if I were to swap it, I'm considering the 350. What would need to be done to complete the swap? Any mounts/ wiring/ adaptors? Thanks for the feedback.

The 301 is a waste, just skip up to the 400. Check with your local auto parts store to see if mounts are the same and if they are still available,

where did you find that gas station in this century?

I found the Gas Station at Hickory Corners Michigan. At the Gilmore Classic Car Museum. I had to take a picture of it. It was a hot day and I left the drivers door ajar, on the Pontiac while I was taking the picture. They have some real old time cars on display there.

Nice Car! ( brings back memories:D)

Had a 77 4 door with a Olds 403 , put some 31" tall truck tires on it and called it the "Green Monster" ( like Art Arfons Bonneville SF record car)It would go through anything and hardly ever broke down. Was a beast and frost mist came out the A/C in the AZ summers. Put like only the timing chain and a trans in it.

Got like 190K out of it before the axle bearings were going out and #8 cylinder started to burn oil. Guy I sold it to drove it a while and abandoned it in the desert when the axle shaft took a dump.

Like Mel said , a 400 is a better choice. www.car-part.com may have a good runner near you. 71-79 would be a good motor to look for if you are after the stock look and unleaded fuel friendly.

What do you mean "a waste" I think it's a pretty good engine. Mine is anyway.

What he means by a waste of time hopping up a 301 Pontiac is that other than adding the stock 4bbl intake manifold and Carb, Change to the 4bbl cam, and make sure the ignition system is working well, there is not much you can do to the short deck 301 economicly. They shaved about 3/4 of an inch off the head deck of a standard Pontiac V-8, this makes the intake manifold Unique to 301's and the smaller 265 V-8's. Unfortunatly no aftermarket parts are available as it was a short run engine only made from 1977 to 1981, and was never considered to be a performance engine.
I did own a 79 Firebird Formula with a 301 4bbl and 4-speed trans, and I put over 140,000 miles on the engine/trans with only fuel and water pump changes, and normal maint. So they can be a very reliable engines if treated well, but if neglected they have been know to spin rod bearings before 80,000 miles.
The other things you could do to improve the performance of the car, is add a Shift Kit to the T-350 Trans to firm up the shifts, and let the engine rev a little higher before shifting. If that isn't enough you could look into a rear gear swap, this will greatly improve acceleration as you car probably has a 2.42 or 2.56 rear gear ratio. Swapping it out for a 3.08 or 3.23 will gratly improve acceleration, but cost you some MPG. And it is something that I would recommend be done by a Good Local Transmission shop. It will not be cheap as it will cost around $300 for Labor, and $300 to $400 for parts. But don't be surprised if it costs more. If you could fins an axle with those gears already installed you could swap it out yourself if you are handy at all, and save a lot of $$$.
Good Luck with it, I see we are on opposite sides of the same state, and I just bought a 78 Catalina Wagon this week, so we have simalure taste in cars as well.

I did alittle asking around the Various Pontiac Forums, and the recommended this site as the most informative on 301's. There is a lot of info specific to the little Pontiac V-8's there

http://www.301garage.com/

I just checked it out for about an hour, a lot of good info there, who knew there were that many people into 301's!
