hi i have a 1979 trans am with a pontiac 400 out of a 1976 4 door car i would like to know what is the timing for it and if regular in it is ok? and what is the best way to make horsepower out of it? thanks

If your interested in stock timing that is one thing if your interested in timing for best power thats another thing. For power pick up a Mr. Gasket or Moroso or Accel distributor weight and spring kit. Dont use the weights in the kit just a set of springs. Hopefully you have a dial back timing light. You want total timing with vacuum advance disconnected of 36 degrees. If you hear no pinging when accelerating, regular is fine.
If you just want a stock spec. try 9 degrees BTDC.
There are tons of things you can do for power starting with the above dist. modification. Headers, aluminum intake, carburetor, performance mufflers, etc.
