Hello i have a 1980 Lemans with the 265 ci v8 recently the Air smog pump has started to make a terrible noise im guessing the bearing in side of it. multiple people have said i can just take it off and maybe even gain a few horsepower. but that pump and the alternator are on the same belt is there a kit that i can replace that pump with a dummy pulley. thanks

I can't remember the belt routing. Can you remove the pump, and use a shorter belt?

thats what i originally thought but it looks like the belt will be rubbing on the water pump housing.

265's were available from the factory with and without smog pumps, trying to find one to compare brackets will probally be a dead end.

Since the 301( simular block) was available at the same time and more plentifull, I would try to find one in a werecking yard and grab the brackets to try . All models used them, Fbody, Bbody, Gbody etc)

or you might find a 265 here that may have them and willing to part with just the brackets .....www.car-part.com

thanks for the help, i was also thinking about getting a double pulley for the alternator and running one belt on the outer part of the the alternator

my 78 gr lemans has the 305 and it had regular old belts, i would think that a good parts store look it up for you . sticker with projeck, ron should be on the inside hood or top of rad , good luck

the air pump is part of what makes the catalytic converter work.

Removing it will result in a bad converter as well.

To delete the smog pump you would need to replace the converter with one that does not require a air pump to work.
