1984 engine dies after coming to a complete stop

I have this same problem. has happened twice now, 91 sunbird with automatic transmission 2 liter engine. Runs fine for a while , then will shudder to a stop and die. Will start again, but as soon as I shift into gear it jerks and dies, like a manual transmission when the clutch is let out too fast. Googled the problem, and this Torque converter problem seemed to be it. I'm no mechanic, and have to be careful how much I invest in this little car. Can I just unplug this thing and drive that way, or will it harm something?

Did on a Citation long time ago, didn't hurt anything....if you use it a highway speeds, they recommend fixing it.....just change the TCC solenoid , it's under the side trans pan...
