1986 pontiac parisienne temperature gauge

Hello, I have a question regarding my 86 pontiac parisienne. The coolant temperature gauge is sitting always between 160 and 165 degrees. 160 degrees is 71 degrees Celsius. Is 160 on the gauge correct? Thanks for help
 
Depends what thermostat is in it, should be a 195* stat from the factory, a 160* and 180* are replacements.

195* is what the factory recommends for emissions to work correctly.

The other 2 are fine if the car has overheating problems or in extreme heat environment like a desert. Some switch thermostats in the summer to a cooler one to make it easy on the engine.Then they switch back to a hotter one for winter .

To check to make sure you guage is accurate, stick a meat thermometer in the radiator with the cap off when warm or use one of those handheld digital thermometers they sell.

Thanks for your reply. I already have a 195 thermostat laying around. Might be changing it soon. I also have another question I am not able to take of the radiator cap???? I can give it a quarter turn counter clockwise but it won't come off. It comes loose and everything but I just can't take it off. Feels like it will be held by something. Is there any trick to it??
 
Yes, you have to push down as you are turning it
