I have bought a 1988 Pontiac Firebird. At the moment it has a 2.8 liter 135hp(when new) engine. I want to switch out the engine with something that has a bit more power, but having trouble deciding on what. I could go with a 305 or 350 cubic inch engine and only gain 30 horse power while worsening the handling. I could get a 3.8 turbo/supercharged buick engine, but I hear they are rare. Or I could stick with the 2.8 and do a bunch of work on it and spend a bunch of money with little improvement. My question is what motor would be best to keep most of the handling I have now, improve power, and not cost too much of a pretty penny.

If you do some research, an lsx motor would be a good swap. 6.0 would be best, but a 5.3 works also. Or you can build a 383 with a 350.

as for the handling thats what they make stiffer springs and sway bars and wider wheels and tires for. They more than compensate for any increase in weight.
