1990 Sunbird (turbo) Stalls when hard braking

Hello group -

My GF has a 1990 Sunbird convertible. It has a 4cyl turbo engine in it (I don't think this is the original engine). Anyhow, whenever you have to brake moderatley hard-hard the car stalls out.

Someone told me it could be a vacumme leak and I have yet to check that - but I am wondering what other things I might look at.

I appreciate any advice anyone can give.

Have you checked for any computer error codes? When did it last have a full tuneup?
 
Not yet I have not - I am looking for the codes now. The car had a full tune up last year and has been driven very little.

I appreciate the reply - I'm not much of a mechanic - at least not on anything but a VW Vanagon.
 
Can I get the engine codes by turning the key a certain number of times like some other cars? Also, do you have a resource for reading the codes?

The codes can be checked without a scanner. Put a jumper between A and B terminals in the aldl plug. It is located under the driver dash. Turn the key to on. It should flash a 12,1 plus 2 flashes. that means it's working, any flashes after that are the codes. each one flashes twice I think.
