First post here, hope y'all are tolerant...
This 'bird belongs to a friend, it don't fly just now.
Has a 3.1L V-6.
The beast is leading me a merry chase. It will bog completely down and stall when accelerator is depressed beyond a quarter of the way. It lights off again and will idle for days if left at idle throttle. Sometimes accepting throttle with no issues when first started (cold) then successively worsens as temp builds.
The show so far: mitigated main harness damage from an engine fire(!). The damage was localized and only a few of the individual wires needed replacing, done one-at-a-time with good wire, soldered and covered with heat-shrink at each joint.
The checklist of replaced items so far (in no particular order):
Plugs and wires
TPS (fire damaged).
head temp sensor
Coolant sensor
T-stat
Fuel filter and fuel pump
MAP sensor
O-2 sensor
ECM and coil pack for cylinders 2&5 (questions about this a bit later)
No idea where the crank position sensor is, this is my first foray into this V-6. I'm a ferrin' car guy. I've seen Jaguars with crank sensor issues but have never been this "intimate" with a GM product. Trained back-when as a Porsche-Audi tech, went thru NIASE Certification before they shortened it to ASE. (not bragging, just a bit of background).
The coil pack question now: the legend on the ECM (both the old and new) show "5-2" but the plug wires were opposite and the under-hood sticker gives firing order as 2-5... what's up with that?
The retrieval of error codes... only returned a code: "12," no other numbers. Will this ECM retain errors or will the error be deleted when the malfunction self-corrects (back to idle when the thing smooths out)?
