1993 Chugging BAD!

I have a 93 Grand Am, 2.3L. It was running fine up until about a couple weeks ago. What it does is it goes down the road and seemingly "loads up". This causes it to chug, or jerk real bad going down the road. If I let off the gas and re-apply, it helps for a little while. It only does it when I'm going at a set speed. When I give it more gas it seems to level off for a bit. Also it just starting getting the "Sooty back bumper" from the black smoke. I really can't pin this down whether is an ignition or fuel issue. My best guess is that the chugging happens right before the car is ready to shift into the next gear. Could it be vacuum and would that cause the fuel soot? I'd figure if it were fuel, cleaning the injectors would be a safe fix. Everything seems to be working 100%. If the ignition, the plugs would show which cylinder was missing. It has me stumped! Any thoughts??

I may have a fix for your problem. I have had a simular situation with my 91 GMC years ago. With the 5.7L and a 5 speed the truck has some guts to it but one day driving to work it just didn't seem right. If I really got on the gas it seemed to dog down but as I left off the gas it would pick up. At first I thought that the clutch was slipping. Thinking that I was facing a costly repair I talked to some of my motorhead buddies. They all pretty much had the same thing to say, change the fuel filter. If the filter is clogged it will cause what you are discribing. It is funny how such a simple thing can cause such confusion. I had no error codes but drivability stank and yes I had too had the soot on the back bumper. The computer is trying very hard to compensate for the starving fuel and will give you mixed signals. Along with the fuel filter can be rubber fuel lines. I have only had this once on a 53 Dodge Meadowbrook. It may have been because the car was so old but I had a short rubber fuel line that shrunk on the inside to only allow a small trickle of fuel through. The car started fine but once it was rolling would starve and stall. Start right back up again but stall every time I would get on it. This started with no warning, one day drove fine and didn't the next. I hope this has been some help to you with your problem.

That's a possibility. These cars come with plastic molded fuel lines from the tank to the under carriage connetions. However, when I replaced the pump, the replacememnt did not come with the lines and they arent removeable from theold one, causing me to use rubber lines. They aren't but about 3 months old thogh. Anyone out there concur that therubber lines are the culprit? The fuel filter was changed along with the pump and lines.

This was due to a bad temperature sensor causing th engine to load up when under acceleration. The compouter was feeding "Cold engine" infor for a hot motor. Thanks for the help.
