My bf just recently lost his job. It was a min. wage/12 hr a week job.
He had saved $700. He's been looking for a cheap car so he can get a better job, in the city 45 mins from our small town. His mom won't take him.

He found a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am for $700.
We've seen it. It's in great condition.
It needs an alternator and a tune up.

How much would the alternator cost? The tune up?

Is this worth it? He just needs a car that will get him to/from work for a while til he saves up money to put a down payment on a good one/buy a good one.

amber,

didn't you read my post below. No one on here is willing to help you out.
But i did look up the info for you. the alternator can be found for just over $100. Not too bad. Except that in order to replace it the mechanics will need to raise the engine to be able to get enough space. So the cost comes in the labor. Unless your bf is a mechanics with all the tools. The labor will probably run about $200. Then a tune up is another $200. You are looking at a $700 car with $500-600 of maintenance needed. For about the same he could get a car in better shape.

Oh and even if hes not a mechanic your bf should be able to do a tune up on his own if he's not mechanically declined. Just do a search to find out what a tune up for your car entails. Usually parts needed are plugs, wires, and various fluids.

and i don't think your guna get much more help then this out of this forum.
