1993 Pontiac grand am?

my 1993 Pontiac it won't start sometimes. and sometimes it does. all the lights come on when i turn it, and it makes a weird nosie. not like a ticke ticke noise like its trying to crank. but another noise like a winding noise its hard to explain. but if i leave it sitting for awhile it starts right up. what could be the problem?

sounds like the starter is going bad and not kicking the gear out to the flywheel. heat makes resistance for electricity to flow.
